Grand Blue Pirate vs Marine
Pick a colour after the kit works, not before you redeem Release!.
Grand Blue splits crews into Pirate and Marine. Code articles, launch videos, and the Eternal Pose pitch all mention the choice. It is a faction flag, not a second Race. You do not spend Trait Rerolls to become “more Marine.” You pick a colour and then live with how 10-player islands treat that colour.
This page is about when to pick, what it changes, and how not to turn the first dock into a colour war you cannot win. Kit first: getting started, builds, races and traits.
What we can confirm
- The fantasy is One Piece-shaped: outlaws versus the navy, islands in between.
- Public write-ups tell new players they can choose Pirate or Marine, then explore the Main Seas.
- Servers hold ten people. Faction is visible enough to start fights.
- Trade Hub, Change Slots, and Customize Character sit on the title menu regardless of colour.
What we will not confirm until the Logbook says so: extra Marine shops, Pirate-only fruits, or a reputation meter with printed numbers.
When to choose
Not on the first title-screen panic. Redeem codes, eat a fruit, finish two quests. If an NPC then asks you to enlist or to raise a jolly roger, that is the choice. If the client asks earlier, pick the fantasy you want to look at for twenty hours. You can always make a second slot; you cannot clone Release!.
How colour shows up in play
Quests. Some givers will lean one way. If a quest stops, talk to the other colour’s NPC or read the Logbook. Do not assume the game is broken.
Docks and PvP. Ten players remember names. Wearing Marine on a Pirate-leaning island is content. Combat does not change binds because you enlisted. It does change who shoots first.
World bosses. A mixed faction arena is still one health bar. Tag the boss. Save the colour war for the exit portal.
Trade Hub. Colour does not make a Celestial fruit cheaper. It might make a stranger trust you slightly more or less. Slightly.
Picking with your fruit in mind
Flame and Bomb want camps. Either colour quests camps. Darkness wants PvP and bosses; Marine may see more structured hunts, Pirate more messy docks — that is a vibe, not a patch note. Cannon wants range; stand on walls, not on faction identity. If a future update adds faction-locked fruits, it will be on updates the same day.
Switching
If Early Access allows a faction switch, it will sit near Race or in a navy HQ / pirate den. Until then, assume you live with the flag or you roll a new slot. New slots do not get new codes.
Social layer
Discord (invite on links) already talks in Pirate and Marine channels in spirit even when the client is still adding them. Do not take a Discord meme as a hidden buff. Do take it as a warning that dock PvP will be faction-flavoured.
The launch video on this page is the social proof that the choice is part of the pitch, not a settings leftover. Watch it if you still think Grand Blue is a single-player fruit collector. Then go press E on an NPC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Early Access pirates and marines.
Should I pick Pirate or Marine in Grand Blue?
Pick the fantasy you want after you have a fruit and two quests done. The kit matters more than the flag.
Does faction change my cursed fruit?
Not on the public table. Darkness through Spin are not listed as faction-locked.
Can I switch factions later?
Treat it as locked until the Logbook shows a switch NPC. A new slot will not clone codes.
Will Marines and Pirates fight?
On a ten-player server, yes, especially on docks. Binds stay the same; targets do not.
