Grand Blue Ships
Buying, sailing, cannon combat, and how ships become your mobile base on a ten-player sea.
Grand Blue is a pirate game, which means ships are not cosmetic — they are your primary method of travelling between islands and a platform for naval combat. The mounted cannons on your ship add a second combat layer that works alongside your M1 strings and fruit skills. This page covers how to get a ship, how to sail it, how to use the cannons, and how larger ships from later vendors give you more functionality.
Progression: islands and quests. Combat basics: combat.
Getting your first ship
Your starting area does not hand you a ship automatically. To get your first vessel:
- Progress through the tutorial until you reach a port or dock area.
- Look for an NPC named Mary or a similar dock vendor.
- Purchase the smallest available ship with your starting gold.
The first ship is modest — enough to cross to the next island and dock. Do not expect combat capability from a starter vessel. It is a ticket to Level 30 content, not a warship.
Sailing controls
Once you are on your ship, the controls are:
- WASD or joystick to steer and move.
- Mounted cannons fire automatically or on command depending on your ship type.
- Hold E to drop the anchor and stop the ship in place.
The anchor mechanic is useful when you want to stop and fish, wait for fruit spawns, or hold position during a world boss event without drifting away from the arena.
Cannons and naval combat
Ships in Grand Blue have mounted cannons that can be aimed and fired at targets while sailing. This is not an AFK system — you need to aim and time shots manually for the best effect.
How to use ship cannons:
- Board your ship and locate the cannon stations.
- Aim at enemy players, marine ships, or world boss arenas.
- Fire and watch for reload timers between shots.
- Reposition using WASD after firing to avoid counter-cannon fire.
Cannons are useful in PvP fights on the sea, world boss events, and any activity where you have a height advantage over enemies on the water. A ship with functioning cannons turns you from a solo pirate into a naval threat.
Upgrading to a larger ship
As you progress past Level 30 and reach Clown Town, and later Maple Village, you can purchase larger and more combat-capable vessels from the dock NPC. Larger ships offer:
- More cannon stations.
- Higher speed.
- More passenger slots (useful on a 10-player server).
- Customisation options for appearance and setup.
To upgrade: Travel to Maple Village, find Mary, and select the option to purchase a new ship. Compare stats before buying — a larger ship costs more but the combat utility difference is real.
Ship customisation
Once you own a ship, you can adjust its appearance and setup. This includes:
- Changing the ship’s exterior look.
- Equipping different cannon types if available.
- Adjusting passenger permissions.
Customisation is cosmetic and functional — pick a look you will enjoy seeing during hours of sailing.
Ships and the island loop
Ships are not separate from the island progression — they are the connection between islands. Your loop when you have a ship looks like:
- Complete quests on your current island.
- Sail to the next island when the Logbook or NPC indicates it is unlocked.
- Stop and fish during the hour-mark fruit spawns (anchor at a coastline).
- Use cannons on any marine or player opponents encountered at sea.
- Dock, complete the new island’s content, repeat.
Sea combat tips
- Do not engage marine ships underleveled — they hit back.
- World boss arenas accessible from the sea are worth sailing to when they appear.
- Cannons have falloff at extreme range — close the distance before firing.
- Anchor near fruit spawn points at minute 58 to secure a node without drifting away.
